It is believed that Holland is a model country for farming. It is not for nothing that Dutch tulips and other flowers are considered to be the best; Dutch vegetable varieties are very popular all over the world. And the Dutch potato varieties have always been famous for their yield and resistance to infections. But not only Holland can boast of its potatoes. For Belarus, potatoes are almost a national symbol. And, of course, potato varieties, bred in Belarus, are in no way inferior to their Dutch counterparts.

The Zhuravinka potato is a good example of what the Belarusian breeding in the potato industry can achieve. Many indicators of this variety, such as yield, disease resistance, keeping quality, are quite at the level of world standards.

Variety description

Description of the potato variety Zhuravinka is logical to start with the history of its creation. The variety was bred by Belarusian breeders in collaboration with Russian farmers from KFH "Niva" more than 10 years ago. In 2005 it was registered in the Russian State Register of Breeding Achievements. The patent was issued at the RUP SPC NAS of Belarus for potato and fruit-and-vegetable growing. The variety Zhuravinka was recommended for use in the North-West, Central and Volga-Vyatka regions. Thus, this potato is zoned everywhere from the Vologda region to the Perm region. However, thanks to the versatility and many valuable qualities of this variety, it is successfully grown in other regions of our country.

The bushes of the Zhuravinka potato are low, the shoots are strong, upright. The leaves are small in size with fairly well defined veins, with an anthocyanin color prevailing in the central vein. On the edge of the leaves is a small waviness. Each bush forms up to six stems.

The inflorescences are large and beautiful, the rims of purple-red color. Berries with seeds are rarely formed. Shoots at planting appear very amicably, and the above-ground part in the first period of development grows very intensively. The root system is also booming in the first month after planting.

Characteristics of a variety

The potato variety Zhuravinka belongs to the middle late, which means that it usually takes from 90 to 110 days from planting to harvest.

Productivity is one of the greatest advantages of the Zhuravinka variety. On average, it is about 400-600 centners per hectare. But it is known that it was quite realistic to receive up to 700 centners. This figure is quite comparable with the yields of the best potato varieties from Holland.

Attention! One bush of Zhuravinka potato variety averages 15–20 medium and large tubers.

It is important that, other things being equal, one can speak about the stability of similar indicators of yield. That is, it does not depend so much on environmental conditions as other potato varieties.

If we talk about the characteristics of potato as its safety, then here the indicators are at a high level. The quality of tubers is estimated at 96%, which means that by the spring only about 4% of potato tubers are in poor condition. The rest do not lose their product characteristics, and when used for food, practically do not differ from freshly harvested tubers in the fall.

An important positive feature of the Zhuravinka variety is that the tubers tolerate mechanical damage well.

We should also emphasize the rather high resistance of this potato variety to various diseases. It is completely opposed to potato cancer and the golden nematode, shows sufficient resistance to scab, blackleg and some viruses, as well as late blight of tubers. Resistance to rhizoctoniosis and late blight of the aerial part is low.

Characteristics of tubers

Tubers of this variety are quite diverse in appearance.

  • The shape can be either oval-round or just round. The surface of the tubers can be smooth, and it can be also relief, covered with a peculiar mesh.
  • The peel is pronounced red, while the flesh is light yellow.
  • The eyes are small, evenly distributed over the surface of the tuber.
  • Tubers of this variety, photos of which are presented below, are quite large, up to 300 grams.

Although the average size varies from 92 to 145 grams.
  • By the amount of starch in tubers, the Zhuravinka variety is also a leader. Its content may vary from 14.8 to 20%. With such a high starch content, the tubers of this variety can be used for industrial processing and production of potato starch. The potato pulp of Zhuravink does not darken after heat treatment and is well boiled soft.
  • The taste of the potato is excellent. From Zhuravinki you can cook a variety of dishes. This variety is used in the industrial production of potato chips.
  • Marketability varieties are also quite good from 83 to 97%. This indicator determines the number of usable tubers when digging potatoes.

Features of growing

Preparing the Zhuravinka potato tubers for planting is not fundamentally different from other varieties. As a rule, a few weeks before planting, the tubers are removed from the storage site, picked and laid out in boxes for vernalization. Since the resistant varieties of potatoes to the Colorado potato beetle have not yet been invented, it is possible to process the tubers before planting with the Prestige or the Commodore. This will increase the degree of protection of potato plants from colorad and other pests by several times. True, the protection usually works only before flowering, afterwards it will be necessary to carry out treatment with any suitable insecticide at least once more.

Any soil will be suitable for growing Zhuravinka’s potato, but this variety is negative to the excess nitrogen fertilizer in the soil, so it’s better to underfeed it than to overfeed it.

Zhuravinka potatoes grow well only in areas completely illuminated by the sun. This factor must also be considered when choosing a place for planting potatoes.

Due to the large number of tubers in the bush, it is imperative to plant potatoes more sparse than for other varieties. The row spacing should be at least 60 cm, and it is better to leave 70 cm. In this case it will be possible to carry out a full hilling of the bushes. They have increased airing and each bush will end up with more sunlight, which will certainly have a favorable effect on crop yields. In the case of a conventional dense planting, the Zhuravinka potato bushes in any case will be pleased with a large number of tubers. Only the size of these tubers will be so small that it will be more rational to use it as animal feed.

Zhuravinka potato grows very amicably and is distinguished by the powerful and rapid growth of both aboveground and underground parts in the first month of its development. During this period, before flowering, additional moisture is very desirable to him. And although it suffers short periods of drought, it will not fail to affect the yield.

Interestingly, the high moisture content in the soil also does not really like the potato Zhuravinka. Under such conditions, outbreaks of diseases are possible, therefore, if the summer is too rainy, then preventive treatments with fungicides, such as Fundazole, are necessary.

Reviews gardeners

Zhuravinka potatoes are planted by gardeners all over Russia, so there are many reviews, and they are different, but generally positive.

Victoria, 28 years old, city of Victoria, 28 years old, we have been planting Zhuravinka for 3 years. For now we like her very much. The wonderful taste of potatoes and, most importantly, is well stored. The only thing that is bad for our latitudes (non-chernozem zone), it grows too long - it is a late variety. But there is an advantage in this - it is not necessary to dig out all the potatoes at a time, and you collect different varieties at different times. After all, we plant on our site every year, 30-36 varieties at a time.

Mikhail, 34 years old, Nevinnomyssk. In our family, everyone is very fond of Zhuravinka potatoes, therefore we plant only him for several years in a row. But last summer was very dry, in June there was no rain, in general, and we ended up a little disappointed in the harvest - there were very few potatoes, and the one that grew was mostly small. Now we are thinking of planting several different varieties in order not to get into such a story anymore.

Lyudmila, 35 years old, Ulyanovsk I decided this year to try to plant Zhuravinka. I bought 10 pieces of small potatoes. After landing my kids got interested in them. I did not keep up with them, so they dug up half of them and roasted them on a fire. But from those that remained in the ground, I collected almost two buckets of large, good potatoes. Tried to cook, to test it for taste - like. Now I store the rest for seed. I think the potato will be good, although which one of me is a vegetable grower.

Margarita, 32 years old, Saratov I just adore Zhuravinka. There is a lot of starch in it, so it boils soft so that sometimes there is nothing left of the potato itself. It is stored very well, it is an additional plus. However, it is late, but they are all well kept normally. He loves the earth to be loose. It is better to plant it separately from others. In order not to confuse and remove prematurely.

Elizaveta, 36 years old, Volkhov. We constantly experience different varieties of potatoes in order to choose for ourselves the best. For several years she planted and Belarusian varieties, including Zhuravinka. Most varieties did not fit our rather harsh climate, yielded a meager harvest, and the tubers themselves did not come out in size. I was pleased only with the Zhuravinka variety - it turned out to be the most productive. Under each bush there were always at least 20 tubers, however, their size was small. It also turned out to be resistant to scab and late blight on tuber. But the phytophthora from the leaves all the time was trying to get down - I had to pick off the leaves. Among the shortcomings it can be noted only that, it requires landing only in a sunny place. No partial shade. And in dry weather, he needs watering.

Conclusion

The Zhuravinka potato, although it came to Russia from Belarus, is quite popular all over the country because of its yield and excellent taste.
