Do I need to dig gladiolus bulbs?

Some bulb flowers do not need digging for storage in winter. This can be said, for example, of tulips. However, can this rule be attributed to gladioli? No, no. This is due to the fact that the bulbs of these autumn flowering plants can freeze out and not survive the winter.

In addition, in a cold environment, gladiolus bulbs are more susceptible to disease. They can also be destroyed by pests, aided by wet and cold soil. Particularly noteworthy are valuable varieties that I want to multiply in the coming year. It is necessary to dig up gladioli of valuable varieties for the winter.

How to dig

So, digging gladioli for the winter is necessary, but how to do it right? To begin, select the appropriate day, which should be warm and sunny. In this case, drying the planting material will take less time.

Digging gladioli should be careful not to damage the bulbs. To do this, the shovel should be stuck in the ground as far as possible. Before proceeding with shaking the ground from the planting material and searching for the children, it is recommended to lay a film or fabric on the ground. So, turning the soil on the basis of fabric or polyethylene, you can keep all the kids.

Digging bulbs of gladioli for the winter does not need to remove the husks from them. The only exceptions are those that have severe damage. Strongly damaged planting material will not survive until spring, so it must be destroyed immediately after it is collected from the soil.

Tip! Damaged bulbs of very rare varieties can be saved. To do this, cut off the damaged areas, and cut the bulbs with brilliant green. Such planting material should be stored separately from the healthy.

Old bulbs are recyclable. The leaves and stems of healthy flowers must be completely cut. Allowed to leave a small stalk, which has a length of not more than 2 cm. The roots also need to be cut. As for the roots on children, they need only be shortened slightly, and in the spring before planting - completely removed.

When to dig

Now consider the question of when to dig up gladioli in the fall. To determine the term of digging up of corms, you need to remember the period of flowering and cutting flowers. Children and bulbs ripen within 30-40 days from the day of flowering and cutting. For example, if the flower was cut off on August 1, then planting material is dug out on September 1.

If you have a lot of gladiolus, then remember the period of flowering each will not succeed. In such cases, you can keep a diary in which the flowering period of each plant will be marked. The records determine the period when you need to dig up planting material.

If you do not cut the flower, then it will take 15-20 days more to form the bulb. That is, it is possible to dig up planting material only 45-55 days after the beginning of flowering.

According to statistics, in the non-black-earth part of Russia, the blooming of gladioli begins in the second half of August. Therefore, the period of digging bulbs falls on the second half of September.

If the corm is not fully ripe, then the children are not yet separated from it, which means that when digging up gladioli, you do not have to look for young onions separately in the ground. At the same time, early digging will not affect the healthy bulb. Not fully formed baby has a light gray or gray color. A fully ripe young bulb is dark brown, barely distinguishable from the color of the soil.

Tubers should be dug in dry sunny weather. First of all, early varieties of gladioli should be removed from the soil, and then later ones. In order not to get confused about where the varieties are, experienced gardeners grow early gladioli separately from later ones. If you adhere to these recommendations, the question of when to dig and how to store gladioli will go to the past for you, and your flowerbed will be complemented by delightful representatives of bulbous flowers.

Disinfection of planting material

After the hostess dug gladioli, they must be protected from diseases. For this, the bulbs are kept in two solutions. The first consists of water and foundation. It should be a weak 0.1% solution. The second part, in which planting material will be soaked before hibernation, includes water and potassium permanganate. It should have a 0.3% solution. In each liquid, gladiolus bulbs should be 30 minutes. If you are unsure of the result after two treatments, the gladiolus can be kept in a third solution, made of karbofos for 10-15 minutes.

Pre-storage of drying planting material, which usually lasts about 2 months. Dry the bulbs in a well-ventilated room at room temperature. During this period, it is necessary to inspect the bulbs in order to timely remove from them the sick and unsuitable for future storage and planting.

Tip! If thrips appeared in the gladiolus bulb, then it must be put in a plastic bag with a special insect repellent. After the package is tightly tied and left for half an hour. Then the bulbs must be rinsed in hot water and again put aside for drying.

Winter storage

If you have gathered the bulbs with the babies, then after drying, they should be separated. To gladioli overwinter and delight the eye in the future, you can put a few cloves of peeled garlic next to them. So, you will be able to protect the planting material from winter adversity such as the defeat of diseases and parasites.

In order not to throw away all the planting material in the spring, it is necessary to provide it with modern insecticides. Experienced gardeners recommend storing bulbs in net bags. So, round-the-clock airing is provided. Optimum storage temperature + 2˚С.

Babies should be thoroughly rinsed, dried and arranged in varieties. Boxes can be tagged. In winter, bulbs need to be checked for illness from time to time. When mold is found on the tubers, it is important to immediately ventilate the room, thus lowering the humidity of the air. A planting material must be sprinkled with a hydrophobic material.

The bulbs, on which the mold appeared, should be wiped with a rag moistened with vodka, and then dried. Planting material with timely processing will not suffer from mold.
